This post is not a comparison between Ramayan and Mahabharat.
While reading Ramayan, some how I mentally co-related certain incidents of Ramayan with Mahabharat, which I would like to list here…
The condition of women in Ramayan and Mahabharat – A woman use to suffer a lot for her husband use to have more than one wife. Never mind from which house (house of king or a common man) a woman belongs to, her self-respect was never considered important. A man in short of wealth can keep his wife as object in game. If he loose game, he will loose his wife. A woman is required to be pious from body, heart and thoughts. She is required to give proof of her piousness but man was never asked to give such proof. Sita had to give tough exams to prove her piousness. Draupadi had to undergo the humiliation of being used as an object in game.
Ramayan observed a fight and so Mahabharat – The main purpose of fight between Ram and Ravan was not for kingdom but for a woman. There are many reasons behind the fight of Mahabharat. The most prominent and known is the possession of kingdom but there is one more reason, Draupadi wished to take revenge of humiliation she had to face when Pandavas lost her in the game. Every fight in this world have been either for woman, money and land.
Life of Ram and Krishna – Both were born as sons of king. Ram had a beautiful childhood in palace while Krishna had his childhood in Gokul, outside his palace. Ram had to stay away from parents for 14 years, so Krishna spent his childhood away from parents. Being a common man when we face such situations, we find hard to stabilize ourselves. While neither Ram, nor Krishna has been referred to struggle to stabilize themselves. Ram had no pain in leaving kingdom. Krishna had no pain in managing flocks of cows.
Both had a poor friend – Ram had a friend who belonged to a tribal caste, living in forests. Krishna had Sudama, who was a poor Brahmin. Their friendship was idle. Ram always gave respect to his friend and so Krishna. Their friendship was not based on money, caste or creed.
The lesson of detachment – Ram while leaving kingdom, gives the lesson of detachment. He accepts whatever he receives in life as a fruit of his karma with smile on his face. Krishna in the middle of battlefield, preaches Arjuna the lesson of detachment. We spend whole life say, “My Wealth”, “My wife”, “My husband”, “My kids”; neither of them remain with us forever. We spend time in earning medals, name and fame but it also does not remain with us. Both taught the lesson of performing activities with detachment.
One can say that incidents of Ramayan are old and needs changes but the lessons to be learnt from Ramayan are not at all old. We still need to learn the lesson to give respect to women, we still need to learn the lesson of love (Ram and Bharat love, Ram and Sita love, Ram and Lakshman love), to live life happily and help others to live happily. All this and many more lessons, which we are yet to learn.
The description of this event by Tulsiji elude my heart such that I am inclined to add certain lines from my side. Even I broke my tradition to write in English.
Later I will translate this post in English.
While reading Bhagavad Purana a question came in mind, Krishna and Ram were incarnation of Sri Vishnu then why Ram had to live in forest for 14 years?, why Ram had to stay away from Sita?, why Krishna lived away from parents?, why an injury was the cause of death of Krishna?
“All is bond by Karma, this bond leads to another bond if we become servant of the bond.”
As per ram katha, a sage’s wife gave shelter to devils during war of God and devils, angry with this, Vishnu took life of her. Sage got angry and cursed Vishnu that he will take birth as man on earth and will suffer the pain of separation. Same way Krishna’s death was result of curse.
All was pre-determined, all was the result of Karma. All is having bond of Karma.
There comes a question, how can Vishnu be bond by Karma?
Followed by the answer which have words of Krishna, “No one including me can stay away from the bond of karma“. Maya, Karma are creations of vishnu. Vishnu in the form of incarnation accepts them and acts but without affection.
This was a big lesson, which is guiding me all the time to perform my duties without affection, with the feeling that i am not the “Karta”.
“At the edge of darkness there is light, so train your eyes to see the edge”
During discussion with team members came this statement. One argument was the edge is the END. How can it be an end? End is the state where mind stops thinking, where we stop finding ways.
A dark tunnel leads to brightness. At the entrance of tunnel there is darkness and eyes may give the illusion that there is darkness ahead. But walking ahead in the tunnel clears all illusion.
Ram was standing at the shore of ocean with Lakshman and others. All were just able to see the water. But Ram stated, “look dear, we are near to Sita, on the side of this ocean there is Sita…..”. Eyes were giving illusion that edge is where sky and water meets, END. But Ram could see the other side of that ocean, Ram could see Sita waiting for him, Ram could see the brightness.
Walking on the path of life, we find hard times, which is merely our thinking. While passing those days, we think there is no brightness. This situation will continue and we will be there forever. But I say, how is it possible? It can be possible only if we dont make any efforts to come out of it. It can be possible only if we wish to stay there forever.
It is we just train our eyes to see within limits. We forget our goals and find ourself trapped in the temporary situation. Only training eyes can help us see the brightness waiting for us outside the dark tunnel and help us see what Ram could see.
I happen to view Ramanda Sagar’s production house creation “Ramayana”. This piece of art is so beautifully created that it attracts hearts and attention even after years.
The narration of Rama’s life is such that it attracts senses and I kept on watching the narration for hours. The narration of happy marriage and 14 years exhalation from Ayodhya and the happy days of ruling in Ayodhya came the chapter where Ram and Sita dissociated.
This narration filled heart with utterly grief and pain. The whole day spent restless with the pain staggering the clamness of heart.
As a commonmen the first thought came to mind “How can Ram whom we call God do like this to Sita who is the incarnation of Lakshmi?”
He knew Sita is pure in virtue and is the first devotee of him, whose every act, heart and soul is solely dedicated to Ram, then “Why? Why? Can Ram let this happen?”
With this question came one more question, “Why didnt Sita argue, faught against the decision of dissociation?”
One answer came from within inside is, “if she would have faught it would have led to arguments and aggressivness which would have resulted in distruction. Also one of the face of a women is the satute of love, ie, mother. A mother faces all hardship with smile and gives happiness and comfort to her children. For Sita people of Ayodhya were her children, so how can she show her power and rebliate against them.” With this thought like her I can see only one option and that is “face hardship and explain with act that kids’ thoughts are wrong”.
But for Ram, my questions and thoughts remained same for few days, I was not able to think on the other side, I was not able to put myself in his shoes. Finally this thought replaced questions…
“Ram was the king, father of people of Ayodhya. People will follow his act. As a husband he knew Sita was pure in virtue but there was strong voice against her virtue in general people and people use to take example of Sita to hide deeds which was not proper. If he would put all behind bars how raised doubts against Sita then it would not be good. Those would be with Ram would also be against him and that would create choas in Ayodhya.”
This thought couple with the thought that “a person who is committed to work, dedicated to work or committed and dedicated to service towards society will only be able to take such a decision. Only such a person will be able to give importance to “Karma” against “affection” and “love””.
It is great irony that, people worship girls but they want proof her chaisty. I take is as these people by default consider men inelligible for the certificate of chaisty.
Hope one day we all learn and understand that puerity is in soul and not in the body.
A song which contains 40 verse is Chalisa. Any such song containing 40 verses sung for any God/Goddess becomes his/her Chalisa.
In this blog I have listed Hanuman Chalisa earlier. This song has become famous and sung by many people today to get blessings of Hanuman, who is known as the form of lord Shiva, who came on earth to server Rama, the form of Lord Vishnu.
Astrologers today recommend almost all to recite this song atleast thrice a day.
This song is composed of “Doha” and “Chaupai”. Doha
